Tabung Amal Aidilfitri Trust Fund or Hari Raya Charity Box, was founded in 1992 with a mission to help the poor, needy and less fortunate Malay/Muslim community during the holy month of Ramadan (fasting month).
The idea was first mooted by the late Dr Tay Eng Soon, then, the Senior Minister of State for Education, who had suggested that Malay/Muslim organisations could organize a public charity drive during Ramadan / Syawal season on an annual affair.
In response to the call, Hj Sidek Saniff, then, the Minister of State (Education) invited several Malay Muslim Organisations and formed what is known now as Tabung Amal Aidilfitri or TAA. Hj Sidek became the first Chairman of the TAA Committee.
During its first year of the launch of TAA, the then First Lady, Mrs Wee Kim Wee graced the occasion. Since then, the Committee agreed that TAA would continue to collect donations from the general public during Ramadan.
Donation boxes were put up at several strategic places such as shopping centres, restaurants, mosques, with its main centre of collection at Joo Chiat Complex. Donations came in the form of cash money and gifts items such as clothings, canned food items and other gifts.
TAA has been in existence for the past 17 years with the support of the 18 Malay/Muslim organisations (Click here for the list of participating organisations).
The current Chairman of TAA Committee is Mohd Anuar Yusop and the Adviser is Dr Ahmad Mohd Magad, MP for Pasir Ris GRC.
